    Symphony Hill Wines

We proudly only use environmentally friendly chemicals on our vineyard and so were delighted to find this little fellow accidentally picked from our Shiraz block whilst hanging onto a bunch of grapes. He was released back to his home in the vineyard after the 2014 vintage was picked.

The key to Symphony Hill’s success in producing super premium wines of unique style and flavour lies in the vineyard. The factors that contribute to our success are as follows:

  • Aventine Wines

    Address:
Aventine Wines, Watters Road, Ballandean QLD, Australia .

    Aventine Wines

The farm, on which AVENTINE WINES is located, was first cleared for farming in the early 1900's by the two Barker brothers. None of those fancy chainsaws or bulldozers in those days. The brothers used 6-foot long, (about 2 metres) steel saws with one man on each end pulling and pushing in turn. Horses were used to pull tree stumps and move granite boulders.

They cleared about 600 acres (about 240 hectares) in that fashion.

The last Barker brother passed away a couple of years ago. Up to a year before his passing, he was still running his farm next door to us, climbing picking ladders with the rest of his workers, harvesting plums for market. They don't make them like that any more.

The farm had been growing table grapes for about the past 100 years. When we took over there were the remnants of various table varieties including a couple of acres of black muscat (Muscat of Alexandria) a variety from which just about all the area's muscats are made. By the time the vines are about 60 years old the quality of fruit and resulting liqueur is splendid. We planted the remaining vines, which total over 20 acres of wine grapes.

The whole farm is essentially located on the side of a north-facing hill. The vineyard is about 1000metre above sea level, and is composed of shallow weathered granite soils. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot days and cool nights. The vineyard is hand pruned, and the fruit is hand picked. We crop at about 3 to 4 tons per acre.

A successful vineyard is about timing, and a benevolent mother nature.

  • Savina Lane Wines

    Address:
Savina Lane Wines, Savina Road, Severnlea QLD, Australia .

    Savina Lane Wines

Grapevines flourish in the granitic gravels of this small part of Queensland’s Granite Belt. In this image, Brad is plucking leaves on the eastern side of the vine row to allow light and air to circulate.

Savina Lane lies in a small basin at 850m elevation, 28kms north of the Queensland border with NSW. Winter here is a time of fire and ice. Summers are milder and less humid with cool nights. The unique granitic gravel soil is well-suited to growing lesser-known vine species – widely known as alternative varieties.

The lovely 7-acre vineyard was first planted almost 60 years ago when cuttings from much older vines were established by the Savina family, who had immigrated to Australia from Italy after the Second World War. The wine made from this Old Vine Shiraz block is now legendary. Other varieties grown here are Fiano, Tempranillo and Graciano, all now between 20 and 22 years of age. In 2012 we planted Montepulciano and Petit Manseng and our first harvest of these in 2016 yielded tiny quantities of beautiful wines which sold out immediately. These vines are now eight years old and producing quality fruit.

  • Girraween National Park

    Address:
Girraween National Park, Pyramids Road, Ballandean QLD, Australia .

    Girraween National Park

Girraween National Park is famous for its granite landscape, eucalypt forests, sedgelands and heathlands. These varied environments are home to a wealth of plants, animals and fungi - some of which are unique to the area.

Girraween is an Aboriginal word which means "place of flowers" - an appropriate name for this park. In Winter (July), the wattle trees burst into blossom and are a sight to see, but Spring (September and October) is the best time to visit, for the countryside is bright with colour as a profusion of native wildflowers put on their spectacular annual show. Summer is when the flannel-flowers, bottlebrushes, paperbarks and eucalypts bloom.

Animals, of course, can be seen all year round. Dawn and dusk are the best time to spot the local mammals. Some, like the Eastern Grey Kangaroo and Common Brushtail Possum are quite used to people and regularly venture into the day use and camping areas. Kookaburras, magpies and currawongs also frequent the day use and camping areas. The park is home to over 150 bird species.
